The mistake that she made was that she only used her debit card. ID Theft is such a common problem these days because the economy is bad, and many people are losing their money, their homes, and their jobs. To steal a person's identity, they would possibly need their name, their address, social security number, credit card numbers, and some other personal information. To protect your identity, do not use too many credit cards, and have little money on debit card. I would say that the person stealing the identity is to blame. The person who didn't protect themselves from identity theft wouldn't know how to protect themselves or what they did wrong.
